Dental Bridges vs. Implants

Posted on: December 13, 2018

The debate of dental bridges vs. implants is one that often comes up in those who are considering teeth replacement options.

Both dental bridges and implants have their advantages. It helps to be able to determine which is better for your situation to ensure you receive the cosmetic restoration that is right for you.

Dental bridges or implants: Which is best?

There are various factors to consider when choosing between dental bridges and implants. By understanding the pros and cons of each appliance, you can make an informed decision about which teeth replacement option is best.

The following is everything to know about dental bridges vs. implants.

Pros and cons of dental bridges

A dental bridge, or a fixed dental bridge, is in many ways a much less invasive procedure than dental implants. It does not require a surgical procedure to place the tooth.

Instead, a fixed dental bridge is an artificial tooth that attaches to the surrounding teeth. For those who prefer a less invasive procedure, dental bridges are the way to go as there is no surgical component to the placement process. Dental bridges can replace a single missing tooth or a set of missing teeth.

A drawback of dental bridges, however, is that it requires healthy surrounding to install. The dentist may alter the existing teeth to fit the dental bridge.

Pros and cons of dental implants

A dental implant is a post that a dentist surgically places and fuses to the jawbone. After the dental implant is placed, an artificial tooth attaches to the abutment of the implant. This provides the patient with a replacement tooth or teeth, that look, feel and function like natural teeth.

When searching for the most authentic form of teeth replacement, dental implants are often the best choice. They are fused into the jawbone and provide a more permanent solution. They also require less care than a dental crown in many cases.

However, dental implants often cost more than dental bridges and the procedure of placing the implant is much more invasive. This is especially true if you need a bone graft.

Dental bridges vs. implants: How to choose

Both dental bridges and implants have their advantages, and the method you select should match your needs.

There are various factors to consider when choosing between dental bridges and implants. You should ask yourself the following questions:

  • How many teeth need to be replaced?
  • Am I a candidate for both options?
  • Which is the most practical for me?
  • Am I willing to endure a surgical procedure?
  • How much of a concern is the cost?

By asking these questions, you should have a clear indication as to which cosmetic restoration is best.
