Tips For Healthy Gums

GumsAsk anyone who has healthy gums about how they do it and you will likely hear all about the importance of flossing and visiting the dentist.  However, there are some tips for healthy gums few are willing to share and some that simply slip the mind when this topic is discussed.

Here is a look at some of the most helpful tips for healthy gums.

The Frequency of Brushing Really Does Impact Gum Health

You need to do more than floss to maintain healthy gums.  Even a thorough brushing once per day will not suffice.  Your gums need a frequent brushing.  Brush at least two times per day for a better chance of enjoying healthy gums and teeth.

Aside from frequency, the manner in which you brush also matters.  Brush along the gum line with light pressure.  Use a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid agitating the gums.

Square Your Focus During Each Flossing Session to Maintain Healthy Gums

Your gum health is centered on the manner in which you floss. Though flossing is quite boring and even slightly uncomfortable at times, it must be performed in a highly nuanced manner. If performed properly, flossing will eliminate plaque between the teeth that would otherwise become tartar.

Tartar and plaque accumulate bacteria that subsequently causes inflammation and swelling of the gums. So take your time when flossing. Clear your mind to focus on this important activity. Use a large piece of floss for your upper teeth. Toss it out after cleaning the top row of chompers. Use a new piece of floss to clean the bottom teeth.

Be sure to use a distinct section of the floss to clean all of your teeth in a thorough manner. Otherwise, you will end up transferring bacteria and food particles between the teeth. When flossing between the gum line and the teeth, move the floss in a C shape. If you dread flossing due to overly tight teeth that leave little space to move the floss, use floss ribbon or floss tape for improved comfort.

Mouthwash is Essential to Gum and Tooth Health

Get into the habit of using mouthwash in between flossing and brushing.  Mouthwash does more than combat cavities.  It also cleans away harmful bacteria from the gums.  Furthermore, it freshens up your breath to boot.

Visiting the Dentist is Important for Gum Health

You should meet with your dentist at least once every six months for an oral health examination and a thorough cleaning. The dentist has the tools necessary to clean away tartar and plaque from your teeth and the areas by the gums.  The elimination of tartar and plaque buildup is essential to preventing gum disease.

Furthermore, if gum disease is present, the dentist will be able to identify it.  Abide by a regular schedule of 6-month dental visits and the dentist will have the opportunity to pinpoint the signs of gum disease in their earliest stages.  Prompt treatment is essential to prevent the spread of gum disease.
